Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), also known as Electrical Resistivity Imaging (ERI), is a advanced non-invasive geophysical technique that creates detailed 2D cross-sections or 3D models of subsurface electrical resistivity. By injecting a controlled electrical current into the ground through current electrodes and measuring voltage differences with potential electrodes. ERT maps variations in resistivity caused by changes in soil type, moisture content, salinity, or rock properties. Modern multi-electrode systems automate data collection along survey lines, and powerful inversion software reconstructs true subsurface models.

ERT operates on the principle of Ohm's Law, where apparent resistivity is calculated from injected current and measured potential differences across electrode arrays. A typical survey deploys 48–96+ electrodes in a straight line or grid on the surface, connected to a resistivity meter that automatically switches configurations to acquire hundreds of measurements. Data processing involves forward modeling and inversion algorithms (using software like RES2DINV) to produce color-coded resistivity tomograms that highlight low-resistivity zones versus high-resistivity zones.

Several electrode array configurations optimize ERT surveys for different objectives. Common methods include :

  • Wenner array (strong signal, excellent vertical resolution for layered structures)

  • Schlumberger array (balanced depth and efficiency, widely used for aquifer mapping)

  • Dipole-dipole array (superior lateral resolution for detecting fractures, faults, or plumes)

  • Pole-dipole (good depth penetration with detail), and gradient arrays (fast, high-data-volume collection).

In practice, hybrid or combined arrays (e.g., Wenner-Schlumberger with dipole-dipole) are often employed in a single survey to maximize both depth and resolution.

ERT is widely applied in groundwater exploration, geotechnical engineering, and environmental studies. It excels at delineating aquifers, mapping water table depth, identifying fracture zones in hard rock, detecting saline intrusion, and locating potential borewell sites—critical in water-scarce regions like Rajasthan and Gujarat. In geotechnical projects, ERT detects cavities, sinkholes, weak zones, landslides, or bedrock depth for foundation design, dams, highways, and slope stability assessments. Additional uses include contaminant plume mapping, landfill leachate monitoring, mineral deposit delineation, and archaeological surveys. Time-lapse ERT monitors dynamic changes such as moisture movement or recharge efficiency, providing cost-effective, non-destructive insights that reduce drilling risks and support sustainable resource management.
